What “Pre-1900” means here
Before 1900 a fountain pen was an eyedropper: you unscrewed the section and poured ink straight into the hollow barrel. As he puts it in his Conklin post, "Before that you had dips and eyedroppers." Conklin's crescent filler of 1898 was one of the first self-fillers. Pens from this era are hard rubber, brittle with age, and old ink "effectively turns into glue" in their threads (when-hard-rubber-misbehaves).
